Abdominoplasty is a procedure that is performed on patients who have given multiple births, have sagging in the stomach area and/or result of post dieting and exercise. If the problem area is only in the lower stomach, miniabdominoplasty will be enough. If it covers the whole stomach and/or includes lower back area, abdominoplasty is recommended. Patients who have planned to lose weight and/or have plans to give birth are advised to postpone this procedure.
How is the Operation Performed?
Abdominoplasty is not a standard operation. The excessive fat and skin around the stomach will be removed and stomach muscles are streched and reinforced. This operation is not a treatment for weight loss, therefore it is recommended to lose as much weight as possible prior to the operation. Full abdominoplasty can take between 2-5 hours, however miniabdominoplasty will take approximately 1-2 hours. It will be performed under general anesthesia.
After the abdominoplasty surgery, patients are required to stay 2-3 nights at the hospital. After the miniabdominoplasty surgery 1 night stay at the hospital is enough. A drain is inserted for 24-48 hours after the operation to reduce the blood and liquid accumulation and a special pressure corset is worn during this time. This corset will restrict movement in the abdomen area and reduce the swelling. To prevent the abdomen area to be stretched, it is recommended that the patient sleeps on a 45 degree angle. A few hours after the operation, patients may start to eat non-gassy liquid meals.
On the third day after the operation, the swelling will start to reduce. Patients will be required to walk while tilting their body forward. Within 10-12 days, patients should be able to walk normal. Patients will be able to return to their social life after 2 weeks and start bathing. However, it is recommended to stay away from the pool and the beach for 4 weeks. It is not recommended to lift heavy objects, go to gym, solarium, sauna or sun tan for 6 weeks after the operation.
It is normal to irritation, redness and itchy traces after the operation for a period of 3-4 months. It will start to fade away after 6 months, however it will not be completely invisible even after 2 years. Therefore, the cut will most likely be inside the bikini lines.
