Hair transplanting is a type of surgery that moves hair you already have to fill an area with thin or no hair. First, the surgeon thoroughly cleans your scalp and injects medicine to numb the back of your head. Your doctor will choose one of two methods for the transplant: follicular unit strip surgery (FUSS) or follicular unit extraction (FUE).
With FUSS, the surgeon removes a 6- to 10-inch strip of skin from the back of your head. He sets it aside and sews the scalp closed. This area is immediately hidden by the hair around it. Next, the surgeon’s team divides the strip of removed scalp into 500 to 2,000 tiny grafts, each with an individual hair or just a few hairs. The number and type of graft depends on your hair type, quality, color, and the size of the area where you’re getting the transplant.
The FUE procedure involves the shaving the back of your scalp and individually removing hair follicles one by one. The area heals with small dots, which your existing hair will cover. This is the most effective procedure for hair transplants. The damage via this procedure will ne minimal and the healing stage is a lot faster.
This technique is the most well known and best technique, worldwide. There will be no cuts in the donor hair root area. Therefore, there will be no cut marks and there is no need for stiching in the area.
Where will the roots be obtained from?
Hair roots will be taken from the back of the neck of the patient. If the roots are not enough from this area, roots can be obtained from the beard, chest, stomach and back. Channels must be opened on an angle to reach a more natural look as the existing hair roots are also on an angle.
Stages of Hair Transplant
OBTAIN ROOTS: Roots are obtained with the help of micromotor tip which is only 0.6-0.7mm. It is important to use suitable roots from the donor area. This delicate area is very important anf must not be traumatised during this process. Roots must be taken out slowly and carefully and removed homogeneously. Integrity of the donor area must not be lost in the progress. Roots must be kept in a special liquid and in a cold environment as they are tiny tissue pieces and must be handle with extra care.
PLANNING AND HAIR LINES: Successful outcomes depend on well planning. Where and how many roots are to be implanted must be carefully considered and decided. When drawing the hair line, patients age and the current hair line must be taken into consideration to reach a natural look.
OPENING THE CHANNELS: Channels are tiny opennings where the roots will be implanted. This process needs extra attention. Channels must be opened in 40-45 degree angles and must be parallel with the skin and which way the current hair is facing.
We use LATERAL SLIT technique in our clinic. This technique is only used by a handful of surgeons as it is a hard and troublesome technique which takes times to perform. During this process, if the channels are not opened in the correct angles, the patient will have trouble with styling their hair in future. This is not the ideal result we are after. The length and diameter of the slits are very important and varies from patient’s hair structure. It must be alligned with the measurements of the root that is obtained to ensure the lifetime when implanted.
The hair roots that have been obtained are carefully implanted into the scalp through the tiny open channels. It must be implanted in the same way that the original hair is facing. It is important for surgeons performing this procedure to work slowly to ensure perfection.
If the surgeon is fast with hair transplants and rushes through the processes, the results will look unnatural. Hair transplantation is a rigorous process and must be completed with care.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the advantages of FUE method?
FUE method allows the surgeon to collect hair roots one by one via micromotor, hence it does not leave any marks on the skin after the procedure. Recovery process is fairly short and the patient is able to return to daily routine quickly.
Is hair transplant a painful procedure?
Hair transplantation is performed under local aneasthesia via small needles. The patient may feel a little uncomfotable at the beginning however after 5 minutes, they will not feel any pain.
Who can get hair transplantation?
Hair transplantation can be performed on patients between the ages of 18-60. If the patient has a critical or serious medical condition, further discussions with the doctor will be made.
How long does hair transplantation take?
The duration of this process depends on the patients needs and can take up to 2 days.
In one session, how many roots can be imbedded?
In one session, 5000 to 6000 grafts can be transplanted. This will result in approximately 10,000-12,000 hair roots.
Can the procedure be finished in one session?
Hair transplat surgery can take up to 2-3 days. It is not recommended to fit the operation into one day as this may lead to the hair to spread out and thin overtime.
Is shaving the treatment area compulsory?
Shortening of the hair in the area at the back of the head where the hair roots will be obtained from, is required. In some small areas (partial) that need treatment, surgeon may be able to perform withouth shaving and/or shortening the hair.
What needs attention for hair transplantation?
The roots must be taken from the area which provides the roots homogenously. It is not ideal to obtain all the roots in one session, as the patient may need further treatments. Planning must be precise: The donor area must be carefully selected to achieve a successful result, all areas must be detected to ensure how much needs to be implanted, hair lines must drawn according to the patients age and face structure, and when opening channels, extra attention must be given and according to the patients own hair roots, all this to achieve a natural look.
What are the rules to be followed after the hair transplantation?
The first week is very important after the procedure. During this week, the treatment area should not be touched, hit or rubbed. Patients sleeping position is also very important - Patients must sleep on their backs for the first 7 days to avoid damaging the hair roots. The patient must refrain from staying under direct light of the sun and rain, heavy sports, sauna, pool and beach activities for a month. Patients can use hair gel, hair spray and dye after 3 months. For the first 6 months after the procedure, patients must shorten the length of their hair by scissors only. Patients may shave after 6 months.
What are the steps of the healing process after the hair transplantation?
2 days post procedure, the hair follicles will start to form. Scabbing will start to appear in the first week which is normal. 7-10 days later, the scabbing will start to fall off. This will last between 15 days and 3 months after the procedure. New hairs will start to grow after 4 months. It can take 6-8 months to fully take form. The process will continue and only after 1-1.5 years after, the patients hair will take its shape and thickness.
When can the patient have the second session done?
Patients can have a second session treatment after 8 months at the earliest. However, it is recommended to wait 1 year. This is because the donor area must be fully recovered from the last treatment.
Can women have hair transplantation?
Yes, women can have hair transplantation as well. The whole procedure is exactly the same as the male hair transplantation. DUPA (Diffuz Un Patterned Allopecia) is the most common reason why women may lose hair. This illness does not happen partially and covers all areas including front, back and side of the hair. Therefore, this may affect the results negatively. The donor area (back of the head) carries a bigger risk of not forming completely and may fall off in comparison to men. However, it is best to speak to the doctor on all options.
What are the causes of losing hair in women?
There are many reasons, the most important one is genetics. Other factors include, iron deficiency, anemia, thyroid diseases and hormonal irregularities related to ovaries.
What is PRP?
PRP is a type of regenerative medicine with the patient’s own blood, uses components called platelets in the blood to rejuvenate the tissue. Whichever area PRP is being performed, the stem cells will be activated in that area and tissues will be renewed. PRP has cell renewal feature and helps in healing process.
What is PRP supported hair transplantation?
We use PRP treatment on all patients. PRP is obtained from the patient’s own blood via special tubes. The 10-20 ml blood will be centrifugalised and the seperated plasma will be injected into the hair transplantation area via small needles. They are kept in special cups where the hair follicles are kept in. They are also used to massage into the donor area (back of the head).
